This is a Western Union telegram congratulating my grandparents on my mother’s birth.  One generation later, she received congratulatory cards, but no telegrams for my birth (although they were still available until 2006).  Two generations later, for the birth of my son and children of friends and family, congratulations are regularly shared in an instant via Facebook and Twitter.  What a difference a couple generations can make!
